Conversation About Christian Nationalism
Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton encourages Lutherans to learn about Christian Nationalism, the ways it is negatively impacting our communities, and what we can do as people faith. A wonderful first step is to learn as much as we can. On August 19, 20, and 21 people (sign up required) will gather for conversation. Each morning, beginning at 9:30 AM, we will listen to a speaker, ask deeper questions, and encourage each other as we learn about Christian Nationalism.
Many thanks to Pastor Dustin Longmire of Messiah Lutheran Church in Schenectady, New York for helping the conversation take place each day.
Monday, August 19 at 9:30 AM -- Come meet James McKim of the NAACP of New Hampshire.
Tuesday, August 20 at 9:30 AM -- Come meet Linds Jakows of 603 Equality.
Wednesady, August 21 at 9:30 AM -- Come meet Rabbi Donna Kirshbaum of Bethlehem Hebrew Congregation and Pastor Nathan Hall of Nativity Lutheran in North Conway.
Thanks James McKim!
As a jumping off point, Mr. McKim shared this great video that helps people think about the topic and what challenges we are facing as people of God who are concerned about Christian Nationalism. Have a look:
Thanks, Linds Jakows!
Linds helped the group look at a historical journey of how White Christian Nationalism has found its foothold going back to 1943. During the time of education of the community gathered in the Conference Center Dining Room, Pastor Dustin referred to the ELCA Social Statements as a wonderful resource for helping us know more about who we Lutherans are as it relates to big issues facing our culture. Learn a bit about ELCA Social Statement here:
Thanks, Rabbi Donna Kirshbaum!
Rabbi Donna shared beautifully with the group and helped focus on the fears expereinced by Jewish people as it relates to Christian Nationalism. Of the resources she riased up for us as tools we can use to learn, she encouraged us to watch the 25 minutes film, "Spiritual Warriors." Have a look at the short film available for free on YouTube:
Thanks, Pastor Dustin!
Pastor Dustin -- after a great three days of welcoming our special guests -- took the floor to present his own sense of things related to his congregation (Messiah in Rotterdam, NY), the ways a congregation can create a contrasting community, and some resources used to get them there. He's shared as important resources -- a video (about 30 minutes) and a book. Click below.
Calumet -- together with the New England Synod anti-racism advisory board -- will be offering a great book reading opportunity: The Falso White Gospel by Jim Wallis. Learn more about that book club by clicking below:
