Free Period is scheduled right before lunch and the campers can choose from a wide variety of choices in all of the departments. On Wednesday of this week, the Arts and Crafts Department offered a Gimp Class. For those of you who are not familiar with gimp, it is a type of plastic string. You can choose a wide varity of colors and make all sorts of creations. There are lot of different stitches that make different designs. Most campers make bracelts or things to hang on keychains. However, the possibilies are endless!
Every morning, campers in Units 1-4 go to Unit Time. During Unit Time, they start with some sort of creative intoduction to take attendance. Then they may sing a song or play a game or two. After the song and/or game, the Unit Leader usually reads the Unit Time Bible Verse for the day and discusses it and what the cabin groups have done for Discovery Time. They end the Unit Time with a prayer and discuss what activities are going on during Free Period.
So, here is your chance to take a sneak peak into Unit 3's Unit Time. They played a game called Evolution where campers and counselors walk around and play rock, paper, scissors. If you win, you turn into the next character. If you don't win, you move down. The first level is an egg, then a chicken, then a dinosaur, then Jesus. The prayer for today was a collaborative prayer where each person says the next work in the prayer.
BC1 in Unit Two went on a treasure hunt today and found some unusual items hidden on the beach (like a kitchen sick)! If you look closely at the picture you will see the clues they were given and the items they had to find... a kitchen sink, the 4square ball for the BJE, and a bag of cereal. Turn up your volume and listen in to the discussion they had about how that all ties in to the theme of the day, "Our Hearts."
(Editors note: The counselors did read the entire Bible story from Luke 24:13-35 about the walk to Emmaus, but due to time constraints, that part of the video was cut out. So there is proof in the RAW footage that BC1 did read the Bible verse for the day.)
During Week One, the Music and Dramatics Department offered a week long Drama Camp sponsored by Children’s Stage Adventures. The CSA founders are Rob and Lorrie Gray, who are Calumet Staff Alumni. Rehearsals happened during Free Period and First Period and a Dress Rehearsal on Friday afternoon. So for a total of only 12 hours, these campers learned their parts, songs, and dances to make the performance a huge success! Check out this video with some camper interviews and some clips of the fantastic musical numbers. In addition, please check our Facebook Page for an album of photos. Special thanks goes out to Rob and Lorrie for all of their hard work and behind the scenes planning and directing.
Our Leadership & Service (L&S) Session 1 is in program right now learning how to be counselors. They have been partnered with a cabin and or tent group for the week. Today was the day that they were given the chance to lead Discovery Time. Today's theme was "Our Community" where campers learn about how living in communities of faith, all are welcomed and valued. This video shows the Discovery Time, planned and implemented by Carson, the L&S from BT2!
Here's a little behind the scenes note... Amy, our Media Director, video taped this Discovery Time not realizing until talking with Carson at the end that it was his first Discovery Time! Wow! He nailed it! Way to go Carson!
