Monday -- A Great First Morning!

Written by Knute Ogren on Monday, 30 June 2014

CharlieWhat a fantastic morning here at Calumet! What kinds of things make a fantastic Calumet morning so fantastic? Well ...

Let's start with pleasant weather for sleeping which means well rested campers. And then add a beautiful view of Ossipee Lake. On top of that, let's pour some classic breakfast aromas wafting throughout camp. And then a sweet view of the breakfast buffet table. Of course, kind smiles and great counselors help achieve the FANTASTIC level. We had it all here at camp this morning. And this pic of a Calumet camper says it all -- pancakes = smiles!

Week Seven, Wednesday

Sandwich MarbleheadThree girls were walking and talking, smililng and laughing. They were very happy to stop for a quick moment while on their way to second period to talk about camp and whatever else came up. From the sounds of it, they all got to Calumet in much the same way most others come here -- one friend inviting another. Apparently, these three girls are in for the long haul. "We're going to be counselors some day!" Nice!

Week Seven, Tuesday

Boys YellowsTeenage boys at Calumet are just like teenage boys anywhere else -- it takes some prodding to get some words out of 'em. But these guys have something that lots of others don't have. They have great counselors, lots of activites, and a safe place to think and learn and discover. Calumet's counselors provide moments where kids can grow and be shaped. Meet some boys from Boys Yellows. They do a fine job at answering whatever questions come at them.

Week Six, Friday

Steve ShackfordWe've had a little bit of rain here this afternoon. But a little bit of rain has never been able to get in the way of Calumet people having one heck of a great day. After the traditional Coordinating Staff Meeting that takes place each Friday afternoon, a few of the leaders headed over to the new mini-golf feature that Maintenance Director Steve Shackford has been working on for a few weeks. He was sort of stealthy with this project but had to finally come clean when Karl saw a receipt for some lumber and wanted to know what Steve needed lumber for. Otherwise, it may have been the case that Steve could have quietly snuck the course onto camp and had everyone wondering, "Where on earth did this great course come from?" Steve has said he'd like to add holes over time. Thanks to a few key folks who quietly slid checks over to Knute, Karl, or Ginger to help cover the costs of a really cool new thing here at Calumet. And thanks to Steve!!

Week Six, Thursday

NY Joe from Boy BandCalumet's departments offer all kinds of great classes for the campers. The swimming department? Well, they offer swimming lessons, of course. The boating department has sailing lessons, and canoeing, and Boating Bonanza. Fields Sports has tennis, and basketball, and all the typical field and court games. And so on and so forth. Then you get to the photo department and the music and dramatics department. Those are two departments that, frankly, you never know what they'll be offering. It's usually something that's wicked creative and makes olderish type camp people shake their heads in wonder as to "Where on earth did they find that idea?" The kids love it and totally dig being silly together. Here's a few campers from the class called, "Boy Band." These are such good kids.
