Reach the Beach Walk 2020

Reach the Beach Walk 2020 -- Go to #4 Below for your Bib Number

We have well over 900 people signed up this year -- nearly double the 500 walker goal for this year! And it's never too late to sign up (other than those who sign up after July 7 won't have their name on the shirt).

Start walking on July 3 and track your mileage. On July 10th, and each Friday thereafter, you'll report your preceding seven days' total miles. For every 5,000 miles the group walks, Calumet's Annual Fund will receive $1,000 that it won't otherwise receive. If we hit the 100,000 miles goal by September, that's a total of $20,000 for camp.

Ten Things to Know ...

1. How does one sign up for the Reach the Beach Walk 2020? Click the button and fill out the form.

People can sign up all summer long and retroactively report their miles from weeks they may have missed.

2. What are the ins and outs of Reach the Beach?

Click on and fill out the FAQ form to see answers to five commonly asked questions. Also on this form: Five quick questions for a game that Calumet Nation will enjoy later this summer. It's a Family Feud type experience. Your help with these questions will help make the game that much more fun!

3. Is the Facebook page called, "Reach the Beach Walking Challenge" the same thing as the Reach the Beach Walk 2020?

Yes. Here's the thing: 946 Walkers signed up for the Reach the Beach Walk 2020, but only 406, or whatever, joined the "Reach the Beach Walking Challenge" Group.

The Facebook Group -- (click the button below to join) -- will have a different "Theme of the Week" that will have you taking pics of certain things to show off to others the kind of walking you're doing. You can find the theme by looking at the front page of the website. Many thanks to long-time family camper, Pat Mahoney, who is coordinating and managing the group's Facebook page!

4. Is it true that everyone gets a Bib Number? And how do I go about reporting?

Yes. Click "Find your Bib Number." Once you have your Bib Number, you'll be ready to report. Click "Video Tutorial on Reporting" to learn how!

5. I registered myself and one or more others. What should I do about helping these others report their mileage?

Great question. Here's the thing: If you registered someone else -- that's fantastic. But Calumet does not have their email address. We only have YOUR email address. If the people, or if some of the people, are going to report their own mileage each week, that's fine with us. Each registrant has their own Bib Number. BUT YOU HAVE TO COMMUNICATE WITH THEM!

6. Can I take on the responsibility for reporting mileage for others in addition to the miles I'm reporting for myself?

Absolutely -- YES. Whatever you and others decide to do is fine with us. All we ask is that you are consistent for the 11 week period of time. If you registered your whole family and you know that the best way for Calumet to get the miles each week is if you report the miles for everyone -- that's awesome! Feel free to report your whole family under your bib number. For some number of people, their Bib Number will never be shown as having reported any miles all summer long becuase their spouse is reporting the whole household's miles under one number. As long as each person's mileage is definitely reported somehow -- we're good on this end.

For instance ...

Karin Ernst has talked about being responsible for reporting her husband Pete's miles and her daughter Madi's miles. Even though each have their own Bib Number, Karin and Pete and Madi will agree that only Karin will report their total miles. In this case, Pete and Madi will have Bib Numbers that have nothing filled in all summer long. It's no big deal at all , though, becuase they know that all of their miles are accounted for in Karin's weekly reporting. Make sense? If not, send Ginger or Knute an email.

7. There's a lot that goes into the planning for Reach the Beach Walk 2020! How will this raise money?

Calumet has brought together a number of donors who have pledged dollars if Calumet Nation can reach some particular goals. They are: For each of the first 500 walkers who sign up, donors will give $15 per walker. We hit that goal! Because we got to the 500 walker goal, Calumet recieved $7,500 it would not have received otherwise. During the one day campaign, we heard from a donor who said that if Calumet could get 50 new walkers within 48 hours, the donor would give Calumet $50 for each of those 50 walkers -- $2,500! Calumet reached that goal within five hours. Another donor, during the one-day campaign, made the challenge that if Calumet registered ten dogs for the walk, the donor would give Calumet $60 for each of those ten dogs. Calumet reached that goal in less than a hour.

Lastly (almost), Calumet brought together another group of donors and asked them to give Calumet $1,000 every time RTB Walkers reached a 5,000 mile goal. If Calumet reaches the 100,000 miles goal, Calumet will receive $20,000 it won't otherwise receive.

If we all do our part, Calumet could raise well over $50,000 from this RTB Walk 2020! Can you believe it!

8. Are there other fundraising goals out there?

Yes. There's one more that's worth a mention. We have one ASK out there still. It's an ask of lots of people to consider making one small pledge. I'm asking YOU to make one additional small pledge. What would it look like if you, and the other one, and that guy over there, and the couple in Vermont, and the family is Rhode Island, and the congregation in Connecticut, and the other hundreds of Calumet Nation folks to agree that -- if we hit the 100,000 miles goal by September 17, each one will come through with their "pledge" ... we're calling this the Angel Donor opportunity. Can you? Any amount is okay. Some have pledged $5. Some have pledge $100. Some have pledged other amounts. If you want to be part of a big challenge amount (which we'll announce in mid August as a way of encouraging everyone), fill out the Angel Donor form. Ginger will do all of the calculations. Thanks for considering it.

9. How will we know about our progress as a whole group?

Karen & Victor Vitek will be changing the "Miles Walked" ticker (found via Calumet's Live Stream Webcam). You can visit the homepage anytime and see how we're all doing. Also, the front page of the website will have the number each week. It'll be easy for you to find out how we're doing.

10. What other things will I need to know?

The Reach the Beach Podcast -- Pastor Joe McGarry, Prince of Peace, Kensington (CT), will be creating and sharing a wonderful podcast. The first episode featured Amy Gillam O'Riley who talked a lot about the behind the scenes work she has been doing for this year's Reach the Beach Walk 2020. This week -- Episode 2: With Facebook Page leader Pat Mahoney! Check it out!

September's Reach the Beach Running 2.0

In June, Calumet learned that Ragnar decided they needed to cancel Reach the Beach 2020 due to concerns related to the Covid 19 pandemic.

In light of this decision, Calumet has decided to do its own event called RTB 2.0. If you are familiar with words like *epic* ... like *wicked ridiculously good* ... and like *an event that will go down in Calumet history* -- then you are already perfectly designed to enjoy Reach the Beach 2.0.

Get ready. This is going to be fun. Details to come in the weeks ahead.
