Campfire

campfireIt was the last night of summer camp. The closing ceremony began in Luther Hall with songs, the reading of texts, reflections from staff and campers, and prayers. Soon, group by group, everyone was dismissed to walk down to the lakeshore, each holding a lighted candle. The oldest campers lined the path, their own candles in hand, ready to re-light any candles that happened to get blown out. As the campers walked, the campers sang songs.

Upon arrival to the beach, the whole camp sat together ... more songs, more reflections. The visiting Chaplain, Pastor Stalley of First Lutheran in Ellington, CT, offered some words from scripture and shared a faith story. Finally, the end-of-the-season “Calumet ’10” sign was set ablaze. The fire’s glow on those gathered on the beach was unbelievable. Together, everyone bid farewell to the Best Summer Calumet Ever Had!!
